User-Contributed Transcription 114down on rolling bench land some 200 ft above R. which gradualy [sic] descend to the Ferry, where I soon crossed over to the opposite side and landed in the center of an Indian village, with swarms of natives of all ages & sexes, nearly naked rolling and playing in the Sand, about 100 yds above the ferry landing, is a gorge or opening in the bluffs through which the River "Palouse" merges into Snake River "Palouse" derives its name from the Indian tribe by that name, is about 25 ft wide, and is noted for its high rocky and vertical banks, its numerous rapids and Cascades, its perpendicular falls, and its great abundance of Speckled Trout - Camped on this stream about 1 m from its mouth, in a course about N.E. from Snake R Ferry, Thus far there is some little bottom land, with a few small willows upon the stream The bottoms are narrow and in all cases hemmed in by vertical Cliffs and Escarpments of Basaltic & Volcanic Rocks which rises to the height of 2 & 300 ftTuesday Aug 7th Started up stream, but soon found it to be impracticable to continue along the river, so I ascended the bluffs on the left side by a steep ascent through a rocky ravine, and for five miles to the "Falls of Palouse" the country was rough, hilly and rocky, majestic columns of Basalt were to be seen in every direction, projecting from nearly every hill and in every shape and form imaginable Arriving at the falls, I found them to be a great
