User-Contributed Transcription 106Ca�on where I found water in places. this is the dry Gulch upon the Road mentioned on the 14th between Pine Creek & Walla W.R. The Bluffs of this creek are similar to those of the W.W.R., and the same S. course soon brought me to Pine Creek, the bluffs are not high and of gradual descent, upon this Creek there is a narrow valley of good land, excellent grass & water, and a small supply of timber mostly Cottonwood, about one mile from this Creek and you reach Wild horse Creek, where I found running water, and fine grass, from thence followed up the Creek to the timber upon the Spurs of the Mts, which I found to be Yellow Pine Continued the ascent to the Mts on the S. side of Creek for about 2 m to the summit of the divide between this creek & the Umatilla From the summit of this divide, there is no more timber till you reach the Umatilla about 2� m From these high lands, some 30 m from the Crossing of the Umatilla I had a fine, distant view of Mt. Hood 180 m distant W.S.W. Mt Adams 160 m W. and Mt Rainier 180 m W.N.W. these 3 peaks loom up in the distance above the surrounding Mts in round and solid masses of snow, resembling white Clouds hanging on the horizon. Here upon this divide I camped for the night and as this is within the range of the marauding expeditions of he Snake Indians, who are the "Ishmaelites" of this country, at war with all
