121longer N.&S. than it is E.&W. containing, at my lowest estimate 150 sections of No 1 farming land, level, well watered, plenty of timber on the Mts around it, beautiful grass and excellent hay can be cut at nearly every point in the Vally. the Grand Ronde River, with its narrow belt of small timber runs nearly through the center, and numerous spring branches, are flowing into it and in most cases disappear very soon after reaching the level, among other grasses, the Red Clover is plenty and very much resembles that cultivated in the Meadows in the N. and western States. In the P.M. I visited the N. part of the Valley, crossing the Grand Ronde River, and after proceeding about 6 m further, I saw near the margin of the timber on the W. side of the Vally a Rancherie of 6 camps of Indians, and knowing that in all probability, they were Snakes, and hostile I examined my Rifle and Revolver to see if they were in good condition, and as there were no horses about the Camps, I deemed it safe to ride up towards them to reconoiter [sic]. light smokes were seen curling up through the rooffs [sic] of these Ranches but saw no indication of humanity or barbarism until within 200 yds of them, when suddenly there was a general "Stampede" of some 15 or 20 Squaws & papooses, who scampered off, up the sides of the Mountain, like so many frightened Rabbits, and quickly disappeared in the timber, The "Bucks" were either out hunting, or more probably on some of the highlands, watching the movements of the Emigrant train.
