115natural curiosity, Above the falls, the stream is running in a S. course for about 1/4 m, with walls or vertical cliffs of 200 ft in height upon each side and turns to the west, and is crowded for about 20 ft through a narrow of 8 ft in width, and then pours its waters down into a deep chasm of 200 ft perpendicular and falls into a round basin or reservoir of water of 30 yds in diameter, with the stream of perhaps 20 ft in width flowing smoothly from its S. W. corner As before Stated, the Rocks above are 200 ft high and below are 400 ft, volcanic & Basaltic formations, presenting a scene of wildness and grandeur far exceeding any thing I ever beheld, in the form of Steeples, Pedestals, Porticos, Turrets &c that it would be impossible for any pen to describe From the N. side it is dificult [sic] to descend to the falls and I only succeeded by descending a very steep & narrow gorge, over piles of blocks & Boulders, some 400 yds above, and from thence to the falls, by picking my way along the side of the stream, at the foot of these high cliffs, where in many places I had dificulty in in [sic] maintaining a foot hold, From the S. side or left bank of Creek, these falls can be approached very easily by smooth grassy ravine, extending from the tops of the Bluffs with a gradual slope directly down to the fall. This ledge, over which the stream falls appears to be overhanging so that the water falls clear from the rocks and expands as it descends to the width of probably 25 ft, and where it falls into the reservoir below has the appearance of a large body of Spray At one oclock P.M.
