User-Contributed Transcription 139"Warm Spring Agency" established in 1857 or 8 & the Reservation is bounded as follows, "Commencing in the center of the main channel of the Des Chutes River, at a point opposite the Range of hills, known as "Mutton Mountains" (the divide between warm spring R. & Tyghe) thence W. along the summit of said range, to the Summit of the Cascades, thence S. along the Summit of the Cascades to "Mt Jefferson" thence down the largest branch of Des Chutes heading in Said mountains. to the Center of Des Chutes River & thence down said River to the place of beginning This Reserve was established for the benefit of the Des Chutes Indians, which at the present time number about 1500 The agency, and other buildings are situated upon the "Shit-tike" creek. a stream of rapid water running E. to Des Chutes, a small branch on the S. side of Shit-tike. forming a narrow bottom of good land which is under cultivation, in the form of a tier of farms. extending up said branch some two miles. The labor, is principly [sic] done by the Indians under the superintendence of the Agent, and the five or six whites in his employ In August 1859 this agency was taken by the Snake Indians. who made a charge upon it and succeeded in driving off all the Indians & whites, capturing a few squaws & Children taking fifty or 60 guns. any quanty [sic] of ammunition a ton of flour and other provisions in proportion and last though not least two or three hundred head of Cattle & horses, done all the damage possible except burn the agency. and it was
