User-Contributed Transcription 128Sat Aug 25th Started quite early and at sixteen miles entered a long level alkali hollow, through which the road passes to Rock Creek 8 m distant This hollow was avoided on my way up by driving up Rock Creek some three miles, from where the road enters this hollow and then striking over the hills for Willow Creek, intersecting the road not far from this, passed down towards rock Creek 6 m to a small spring called "Cedar spring which affords water enough for man and horse, and not much to spare, This spring has a curious name applied to it, as there are no Cedar or any other timber near it, and no shrubbery, except sage brush or Grease wood. From this place a trail leads over the hills to John Days R while the wagon Road runs via Rock Creek some 5 or 6 m further Took advantage of the trail which led more westerly and in 5 m was on the bluffs of John Days River, On these hills saw a few boulders of white granite and some broken specimens of crystalized quartz The descent to the River was steep at an angle of 45 and m in length, the river at this time is much lower than when I made my way past here in June last, I forded over and found the water not over 18 inches deep, Ascended the Bluffs on the opposite side and took the right hand fork for the Dalles, travelled about 10 miles N Westerly and camped upon the high table lands without water
