User-Contributed Transcription 141Friday Aug 31st From the Bluffs of Rush Creek, course was S.S.W. for 12 m over a high plain, nearly covered with beds of lava, that had apparently flowed over it in a melted State, with scattering Junipers filled with their small blue berries, when I arrived at the bluffs of [crossed out: the] a large branch of Des Chutes River, which I will call the W. fork of Deschutes [sic]. to distinguish it from other streams. until I can learn its proper name, The Ca�on through which this stream flows is about 1000 ft deep, narrow & chasm like, formed of a variety of rocks, such as Basalt, Volcanic, Conglomerate, and cliffs of a whitish rock resembling chalk A few yds above where I reached the bluffs the trail made down through an opening in the rock, and wound its way down in a zig-zag manner, over piles of huge boulders, to the narrow bottom bordering the stream below, and from thence the trail leads up river to the right, for about two miles, to a very pretty grassy bottom of good land, large enough for a good sized farm, terminating in two or 300 yds farther in Sandy soil and a heavy growth of Yellow Pine Here I intended to camp for the night, but in examining the diferent [sic] formations, the most curious of which was the soft white strata cropping out of the cliffs; by Fremont, noted as "Porcelain clay" my attention was attracted by an Indian above, who had discovered me & was approaching carefully from up River, he looked savage and ferocious with his eyes directed towards me, but very soon, as as [sic] his side was towards me, he appeared suddenly
