User-Contributed Transcription 133 I made my way out of town, by a winding route up the hills. in a S.E. course, to the high lands and here the road turned south, and in three miles descended into a narrow Valley called "Three mile" Creek. There is no creek here at the present dry time, but obtained water from a spring near the Road, This Valley is occupied by farmers, and crops look pretty well, From this you cross over another divide to "five mile" Creek, and like Three mile, I found a dry channel, but no water with a narrow tier of farms, Ascended the Bluffs some 4 or 500 ft. crossing another divide and descending to "Eight mile" Creek, where I found a fertile valley of 1/4 m wide. claimed and under cultivation, with a rapid little stream of 10 ft in width running N.E. with a small growth of Alder and willow upon its banks From this creek, I ascended the Bluffs to the highlands. and camped for the night The several streams passed, derive their names from the distances they are from "Dalles City" by the wagon Road, which I have travelled thus far. Their general course is N.E. with high dividing ridges between them From these high divides, you have a fine view of Mt Hood bearing W.S.W. and Mt Adams about N. 20 W. and each of them about 40 m distantTues Aug 28 Left camp and soon descended to "fifteen mile Creek", a pretty creek of 10ft wide rapid. and quite a thick growth of birch, aspen
