User-Contributed Transcription 130and rapid, and about 100 yds wide. and a short distance below the bridge, the rapids terminate in a perpendicular fall of 3 ft, About 400 yds below the mouth of the river, upon a narrow sandy level, at the foot of high Escarpments of Volcanic rock, stands "Des Chutes City" a little town of � doz buildings, [?...ted?] as being the foot of navigation on the upper Columbia, for all freight for the Upper country has to be transported by land from the Dalles to this place, a distance of fifteen miles, and here it is reshipped for Walla Walla (Old Walla Walla 30 m from Walla Walla Town) and other points up River, Directly in front of the town is a small gravelly Island and between that and the shore lies the shipping of the place, conisting {sic] of the steamer "Col Wright" that runs from the place to points up River, and a new Steamer in process of building, two or three sloops and sail boats and a few Indian Canoes Near the opposite shore is a high rocky Island of a mile or more in length. beautifully set off with Basaltic formations of one hundred feet or more in height, From this place to Dalles the River is rocky & Rapid so that the two places are not connected by navigation From this place the wagon road ascends the bluffs in a tortuous route, and it is decidedly up hill business for the first mile, to the forks of the road, the left fork bearing off more to the left among the hills, and the right leading more directly down River, this road I followed, which soon terminated in nothing more than a trail, after travelling five miles, passing two or three good springs having flow
