136uneven surface, covered with beds of Lava with occasionally a Juniper tree, (resembling cedar) for 10 miles to a ravine coming down from the Cascade Mts. terminating in a beautiful grove of Oak timber, as it reaches the table land, in this grove found a spring of muddy water, at this place the trail forked, and by by [sic] taking the left fork, I soon ascended long rocky hill. from which I found a hilly country and rough road for five miles, when the trail marked a steep descent to a dry creek with a little timber and small shrubbery upon it, and a few rods below where the trail crosses, there appears to be quite a large grove of Aspen, some as large as 8 or 10 inches in diameter Leaving the bed of this Creek, you again ascend the highlands by passing through heavy timber Y. Pine, Fir & Oak, which extends to the top of the hills, you then leave timber and at one mile from this, cross a small branch of Stinking water running W. This water is cold and good to drink but smells bad, About 2 m from this passed two or three little Springs. and passing these a short distance, discovered Quartz boulders in abundance scattered promiscuously over the plain, Some of these were beautifully crystalized. This being a sightly place, I camped for the night with Mt Hood N.W. Mt Jefferson S. W. and the "three sisters" S. 10 W. all in full view, with secondary peaks and old craters innumerable, particularly in the vicinity of Mt Jefferson, and the "Sisters"
