[?until?] 6 P.M. when a storm of wind arose and for [?one?] half hour blew so violently that it was dificult [sic] to remain in the saddle, and during its contin[uing?] my horse was unable to proceed over 50 yds, the dust and sand flew so violently that it was necessary to conceal face and eyes to prevent destruction to the countenance, and for some time after the storm had blown over my face felt as if it was badly pockmarked At the Well Springs I found a portion of the Emigrant train, the balance having gone to the lower spring, and the comforts of their travelling Encampment was kindly shared with [?me?] and most duly appreciated, At dark the wind died away and the evening was cool and comfortable, these springs do not contain as much water as when I past up in June [?last?] and not as strongly impregnated with Alkali which seems to be evidence that that substa[nce] is confined near the surface At these springs a battle was fought [between] the Volunteers & Indians during the "Cayuse[?War?] of 1847 in which the "Cayuse Indians" [?were?] routed and driven N. to the land of the [Walla] WallasFriday Aug 24th Left the Springs with the Emigr[ant] wagons and arrived at Willow Creek at 2 P.M this stream at this time does not contain runni[ng] water but affords plenty in holes
