134willow, Rosebrush, alder &c. This Valley is � m wide and contains good farms and farm houses From this valley travelled five miles S. over a high divide, and descended into a deep dry ravine of Yellow pine timber extending west to the heavy timber of the Cascade Mts. which has all the time appeared a few miles to the right of the Road, From this Creek or dry Ravine you ascend again through scattering pine & Oak timber to the highlands. and travel over gently rolling country, with frequent beds of broken Lava appearing upon the surface, to the Bluffs of Tyghe Creek which are about 1500 or 2000 ft high, The descent was tedious the ground rocky, principly [sic] fine broken lava At the foot of the hill noticed a lonely grave covered with a mound of rock, and carved upon the head Board is the following "Sacred to the memory of Mrs Sarah Sutton. died Sept ________-" The lower part of the inscription was uninteligible [sic], in consequence of the board being some what decayed From this place it is about 1 m to the crossing of Tyghe where I stopped for the night Saw a Skunk today and a Gray Squirrel, the only specimens of those animals yet noticed on this side of the Cascades Mt Hood rises in the form of a huge pillar of snow, in a course about N. 75� W and is the only snowy peak visible from this crossing. in consequence of the high bluffs, although Hood Adams & Jefferson are visible from the
