137Thurs Aug 30 Country uneven or gently rolling. At 4 m from camp passed a small spring, affording a small supply of water. and soon after passing this the trail bears more to the left. around the side of a Steep hill, with a deep Ca�on to your left, passing around this hill and then descend a steep rocky descent for � m over loose fragments of rock and numerous quartz boulders, to the head of a small spring branch which flows through a narrow rocky gorge, of not over 30 yds wide, with irregular, vertical walls of Basalt of 150 or 200 ft high, following through this Gorge the rocks become less in height, where at � mile I arrive at the banks of a River of 25 yds in width flowing in a rapid current E. to Des Chutes. A few yards alone where the trail intersects the River, there is a rapid and perpendicular fall of about 2 ft. At this place I made an unsuccessful effort to obtain some fish, but if there were any in the streams, they did not manifest a disposition to bite at my hook. Followed downstream upon a narrow bottom of 30 yds wide with high E [?] to the S. side, directly upon the opposite bank and obtain 2 ft of the water is a small spring of warm water, with a stream of two or three inches wide flowing from it, wide the River. From this the trail leads down on the right bank of the River, about 1/4 of mile to a cluster of hot springs, to the left of trail with just room for the trail to pass between these springs and the high cliff is the right, these springs
