User-Contributed Transcription 125present time, whose recolection [sic] of their past sufferings and the kindness bestowed upon them by the people of Oregon, under such trying circumstances [crossed out:the]never can be erased from their memory It appears to be very strange, yet such is the case that people will leave their pleasant homes, with the many comforts around them, of good society &c and strike off across the plains, the deserts and mountains to find a home on the shores of the pacific where there is but little attraction except the beautiful Climate, which is sufficient for those in search of a healthy locality When families in any part of the States break up their homes, and prepare for the long and tedious journey across the plains to Oregon, and cast the last lingering look, upon their friends, relatives and the comforts with which they are surrounded, which look will be forever fresh in their memory, their spirits are kept up in a manner by the new scenes and excitements incident to an overland journey, until they arrive at their destination, and then a few days are sufficient to enable them to contrast the comforts, enjoyments, and pleasures of the past with the very uncertain hopes of the future. Most Emigrants become very much discoraged [sic] and very home-sick, during the first year of their residence in Oregon, but as they become acquainted with the people, the habits of the people, the manners and customs of the Country, and the diferent {sic] kinds of business, and begin to experience the benefits of an Oregon Climate, they become more reconciled and then, and not til then, they
