User-Contributed Transcription 87forks of the road the passer by will notice a grave and the curious will read, upon the head board the following inscription "R. P. Frizzell, died Oct 11th 1852, from Newton Co Mo." From the junction of the roads you descend a long ravine, filled for the first two or three hundred yds with drifting sand, which is followed by rocky pavements of sharp broken volcanic rock which continues for � m to the narrow bottom bordering the river, this bottom land is about 1/4 m in width, and � m above is a house and an established Ferry, where we swam the Cattle and ferried our horses, and followed up stream � m and camped at the mouth of "Rock Creek," John Days River is a stream of 60 yds wide that rises in the blue mountains and runs N.W. about 75 miles and empties into the Columbia The name of this River originated something nearly as follows, John Day, a Kentuckian in the employ of John Jacob Astor, in the early history of this country, in ascending the Columbia R. in one of the N.W. Fur Co Canoes was taken sick and became delirious at the mouth of this River, and was conveyed from there to Astoria, at the mouth of the Columbia River, where he died shortly afterwards, and from that circumstance the river derives its nameSat. June 23d From this the road leads up Rock Creek, which is a stream of 12 ft wide heading off towards the Blue Mts and runs W. N.W to John Days River
