89 This Valley is about 1/4 m wide, and a few claims are held and occupied by Stock raisers The Creek is about 12 ft wide and but little water running in it, It probably derives its name from the small growth of Willows growing along its banks, At this place camped for the nightMonday June 25th Our drive today will be 13 m to "Well Springs" the next nearest water The Road leaves Willow Creek by following up a ravine, by a gradual ascent for 2 m to the table lands, and then about E.N.E. over high dry land for 13 m when we arrive at the springs and camp These springs are situated in the extreme head of a dry ravine leading off N. to the Columbia at this encampment, there are two springs of 200 yds apart, and some 1� m below there is another with roads passing by each. there appears to be plenty of water, but it is so warm and so strongly impregnated with Alkali as to render it scarcely fit for use, but necessity compels us to use it, The surface of the ground, is made white by an incrustation of alkaline substance, of the color and qualities of Salratus For the last three days it has been very hot, the atmosphere smoky, the ground dry the roads dusty, to day is the warmest of all and the water the poorest, not even a bush or shrub under which a person can obtain a shade of rest Sage bushes are scattered through the vicinity and Rabbits are quite plenty.
