User-Contributed Transcription 94clear water, its shady timbered bottoms and its low banks, all combine to make it a very pleasant & handsome locality, On the Road today [crossed out: Thurs June 28] saw wild flax with blue blossoms resembling flax cultivated by farmers, also the Cactus or prickly pear with blossoms of a rose shaped form and of yellow color, Aside from these saw a beautiful flower of pink color and resembling a "tulip'; The broad leaved milk weed seems to flourish, also the thistle resembling the "Canada thistle, Also a flower of deep red color in form of the garden mallowsThurs June 28th Left the Umatilla by ascending the hills in a N.E. course, by gradual ascent � m and then led off in an E. course over gently rolling country for 10 m to a place where the road forks and taking the right hand fork, we found ourselves at two miles by gradual descent on the Umatilla again, and from this our road was up stream for 2 miles upon narrow bottom land to the crossing of the Emigrant Road, and at this place the Dalles & Walla Walla road bears off to the left of the River (right bank) while the Emigrant Road crosses and makes for the Blue Mts some 15 m distant on the the [sic] right of the River (left bank) At this place I take leave of the band of cattle, but made this place my home for some two weeks, a house is kept here for the accommodation of travellers, and is a very good location for that purpose, being at the junction of the Walla Walla and Emigrant Roads, Here I saw the best garden growing that have seen this side of the Cascade Mts
