User-Contributed Transcription 96the appearance of rye except no beards on the heads - also a species of wild red top common to the bottom lands but does not grow upon the high lands, while the Rye Grass is peculiar to alkali land and grows upon hills or bottoms wherever the ground is impregnated with the alkaline substances Cattle or horses will leave the fine meadows of red top & rye grass and immediately make for the hills and seek their satisfaction among the low bunch grass which they seem to prefer, even after it becomes ripe and as dry as any cured hay On the third of July, in riding round to take a view of the country, when about 3 m above this, on the opposite side of the River, on the Emigrant Road, discovered a grave, on a low bluff, with this inscription "Thomas Banks, died Sept 18th 1852 Aged 68" This grave like nearly all others Emigrant graves is enclosed with small logs and covered with the same also 1/4 m above the house of Entertainment saw an other grave, and not being in the immediate vicinity of any road, attracts more attention, upon the head Bord [sic] is the following "Tho. Embrick of Co. "D" 1st Regt O.M.V. died April 17th 1856" It appears from the above that this man had died in the service of his country during the [?memorible?] campaign against the Indians in 1855&56 The country is destitute of any large game, but small game abounds along the streams, such as Rabbits and Prarie chickens, and Jack ass Rabbits are more common to the thick sage brush, the Curlew is quite plenty at this place, and the
