User-Contributed Transcription 104[left margin of the page is obscured][Indians] to christianity, had expended time and money [in order] to rescue them from barbarism, surrounded [?by his?] family, servants & friends, dividing his time [and] attention, to their benefit, trusting in Providence [for] protection. when on that dreadful day, oh [?horror?] of horrors, the house is surrounded by Indians ( [?deadly?] Indians) who break open the bolted door [with] axes, rush in and the bloody deed is done [the] whole Whitman family, servants & friends, in [?all?] some 14 or 16 souls, are butchered, are mur[dered] in Cold blood, by those they were trying to [?], who heeded not the screams of the women [the] cries of infant children, which was [?] music to their savage ears, thus died the [?] Whitman family, martyrs to their faith, and [the] mouth of Mill Creek will be forever noted [as the] scene of the "Whitman Masacre" [sic] [The] Valley is well watered, well stocked and [?] thickly settled, grass is poor, in consequence [of] much stock, ranging in the vicinity {From] W. Walla, I travelled N. Easterly up mill [Creek] about 10 m and becoming pretty well [?...fied?] with the Character of the Country its [?...ate.?] soil and natural advantages, I concluded [?] return to Umatilla along the foot of [the] Blue Mts The Blue Mts are an [?isolated?] range of highlands that are not attached [?to any?] other range of Mts. The Columbia & [?] river bounds them on the N. Snake R [on the] E. Des Chutes R. on the W. and [?to......?] they are cut of [sic] by the "Malheur" River ( a [?branch?] of the Snake) and a Chain of small lakes &
