104[left margin of the page is obscured][Indians] to christianity, had expended time and money [in order] to rescue them from barbarism, surrounded [?by his?] family, servants & friends, dividing his time [and] attention, to their benefit, trusting in Providence [for] protection. when on that dreadful day, oh [?horror?] of horrors, the house is surrounded by Indians ( [?deadly?] Indians) who break open the bolted door [with] axes, rush in and the bloody deed is done [the] whole Whitman family, servants & friends, in [?all?] some 14 or 16 souls, are butchered, are mur[dered] in Cold blood, by those they were trying to [?], who heeded not the screams of the women [the] cries of infant children, which was [?] music to their savage ears, thus died the [?] Whitman family, martyrs to their faith, and [the] mouth of Mill Creek will be forever noted [as the] scene of the "Whitman Masacre" [sic] [The] Valley is well watered, well stocked and [?] thickly settled, grass is poor, in consequence [of] much stock, ranging in the vicinity {From] W. Walla, I travelled N.
