User-Contributed Transcription 86following this down in a N.E. course about 3 m we came to a beautiful spring of water where we camped for night, the ravine in which we are now camped is about 100 yds wide, level, with good grass, with bluffs 1 or 2 ft high covered with beds and streams of Lava, and occasionly [sic] perpendicular cliffs of Basalt, Around these springs is a few bunches of willows sufficient to afford the necessary fuel for campingFriday June 22d The night was cold and frosty, Started early down this little Valley which continued of the same width, with bluffs of the same height, passing pools of water at short intervals, frightening many prarie chickens from the high grass, at three miles from camp passed the last water and saw the last chicken and about 6 m further the road left this ravine, by turning off to the left, following a smaller ravine something like a half mile to the high table lands, from here the road turns N.E. for "John Days" River 10 M distant, From these table lands, you have a splendid view of some of the snowy peaks Mt Hood W.S.W. Mt Adams N.W. and Mt Rainier N.N.W. Rainier is situated in Washington Territory, and E. from the southern extremity of "Pugets Sound" At 10 m from this ravine or "Long Hollow" over gently rolling country, we intersect the "Dalles and Walla Walla Road" upon the bluffs of John Days River, directly in the
