105and streams extending N. from near the head of that river to the vicinity of Klamath Lake, to the S. of the head of Des Chutes River, from which flows Klamath River in a W.S. Westerly Course to the Pacific Ocean After turning my horses head Umatilla wards I travelled about 5 m S.E to the foot of Blue Mts where I camped for night, country slightly rolling and more so as you approach the Mts; these Mts appear to be heavily timbered with Yellow pine and tamarack, and here the settlers are compelled to resort for the most of their timber, the timber is so inconvenient that much fencing is done by ditching This Valley contains a population of about 1500 who have settled here within the last three years, it contains much good land, well watered, and consequently must become one of the most important points E. of the Cascades, Prarie Chickens and a few Rabbits are the only game in the valley. Kiotas are abundant all over the open country from the Cascades to W.W. and as you enter the Blue Mts Bear Elk Deer & Grouse are to be found,Monday July 16th Started early in the morning, in a S. course along the foot of the Mts. and at 12 m came to the bluffs of Walla W. River, which were very abrupt and about 400 ft high, and generally terminating at their [?] in Cliffs of basalt, It was a steep descent to the river, which I found to be 50 ft wide, and timbered the same as below Ascended the bluffs on the opposite side, and in 3 m descended into a deep Caon called dry creek
