99of the Whites to bring the offenders to justice. At the House of Entertainment upon the Umatilla I stayed until Friday July 13th, when I again set out for the Valley of the Walla Walla some 40 m distant. The road leads up the River some 3 or 400 yds and then bears off to the left in a N. Easterly course over high rolling table lands And as my object was the exploration of the Country, I directed my course up the river on an Indian trail, which leads along at the foot of perpendicular cliffs & walls of Basalt, upon steep deposits, at the foot of these cliffs, with the river below you, and so steep that if your horse should fall or slip he would go rolling down to the Umatilla some 200 ft below you. Such roads are so common in this country, that a rider seldom ever dismounts for fear of danger to himself or animals, although to one not accustomed to a Mountainous Country, such roads would be at once pronounced impassible At [?3?] miles after leaving the the [sic] "Walla Walla Road", you leave these cliffs of rocks behind you, and strike upon a creek called "Wild Horse" Creek, So named from bands of wild Indian horses formerly occupying its narrow Valley It has a channel of about 15 ft wide, but, at the present time contains no water, except in pools. Willows, Choke Cherry Thorn, Currant bush and a beautiful shrub containing white flowers, grows along this stream in a narrow belt It appears to be the Character of most of the streams of this Country to sink, during the dry season before they connect with other streams to which they are flowing They all appear to have plenty of running water up near the Blue Mts from which they all flow.
