?02creek". "Willow Creek" all lose themselves, and during very dry seasons the Umatilla sinks before it reaches the Columbia From the mouth of Wild Horse, its general course (upstream) is about N.E. with a valley of bottom land of 200 yds wide from the foot of one bluff to the other. These bottoms are level, with loose dry sandy soil. with occasional patches of rich deposits of vegetable mould, producing a good quality of grass, consisting of Wild red top, & clover and the Rye Grass, so comon [sic] to all ground. the least tinctured with Alkali, This Creek is the boundary of the Indian Reserve, from its mouth to its source Followed up the Creek about 10 m and finding service berries more plenty than I ever saw them, I concluded to camp for the night. Saw plenty of chickens today and several Kiotas, which are very abundant in this open CountrySat July 14th Left my Encampment and continued up stream some 4 or 5 miles to where the Walla W. road touches the Creek, The bluffs of this creek which were at first about 150 ft high have become gradually lower until now they are not over fifteen or twenty feet above the Creek bottoms From the point where the road touches the Creek the Creek bears off Easterly and heads not far from the Umatilla, the bottoms at this place are claimed and occupied, the soil is good. From this bend the road continues on in nearly the same N.E. course, and at 4 m cross "Pine Creek" of 6 or 8 feet wide, running through a deep hollow
