Description Watercolor drawing by Charles Altamont Doyle (1832-1893), father of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, of a fairy and gnomes clustered around a young girl who has fallen asleep under a bush in a meadow with a baby in her lap, perhaps a younger sibling whom she has been minding. The "bad fairy"--an old hag with her black cat seated upon her shoulder, brandishing a crutch--and the fearful expressions on the faces of the gnomes add a sinister note to the idyllic scene.

Subject and style of drawing suggest that Doyle possibly painted this watercolor sometime between 1860 and 1879, before he first entered what would be a series of asylums. Similar gnomes, dressed in blue with red neck kerchiefs, also appear in the diary sketchbook he kept during his later years at the Sunnyside asylum; cf. The Doyle diary / by Michael Baker.
