Summary Summary of expenses, recorded on three days during the period December 1779-January 1780, incurred by Samuel Ruggles, constable of New Milford, Connecticut, for his role and for the contributions of others in the transportation of a young mixed race woman traveling across Connecticut to Dover, New York. The unidentified woman traveled to New Milford under the authority of the constable of Newtown. In his accounting for 29 December 1779, Ruggles notes that due to extreme winter weather and poor road conditions, he enlisted a number of men to assist him, primarily through the use of their horses. On 31 December, Ruggles documents expenses for meals and "pints of sider" with Colonel Canfield and a stay at the home of Dan Gratis. Finally, on 20 January 1780, Ruggles lists expenses for transporting the woman from Gratis's home to the constable in New Fairfield, with the assistance of Amos Lewis, a Black man who lived in the town. It is likely that Lewis was a free Black man, but it is unclear whether the mixed race woman was enslaved or free. Manuscript additions by the auditor and justice of the peace of Litchfield County, dated 8 May 1780, authorize the payment of 68 pounds and 7 shillings to reimburse Ruggles for all expenses. An additional confirmation of the payment to Ruggles is also signed by Noble Fine.
