Summary
Guest register of the Cataract Hotel in Niagara Falls, N.Y., for June 16, 1837 to Sept. 29, 1840. The Cataract Hotel, one of the early large hotels at Niagara Falls, was built by Parkhurst Whitney in 1832, and remained in operation until the 1920's. The register contains the names of thousands of travellers to the Falls, their places of residence, room numbers, and destinations. Guests hail from all parts of the United States, although many are residents of towns nearby such as Lewiston, and Chippawa, and other New York cities such as Rochester, Oswego, Oneida, Rome, Binghamton, and Buffalo. Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut are well-represented--there is even a group led by a professor from Yale University, and Canadians visit from Halifax and Toronto. Many guests are American or British military officers, probably because of the Canadian Rebellion of 1837-1838, which resulted in a concentration of American military forces in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Scattered among the guests' names are brief notes on the schedules of steamships and packet boats which serve the Falls, including the "St. George", the "Oswego", and the "Syracuse." Other notes record accidents at the Falls, such as the death of N.L. Hungerford of West Troy, "killed by the falling of stones at the Cave of the Winds"; or a fire aboard the steamboat "Washington" on June 16, 1838, in which 40 or 50 passengers were burnt or lost.
