Summary Letter, dated August 20, 1637 in Manila, from Jesuit missionary-priest Father Magino Sola, to the Jesuit provincial of the province of Aragon, concerning the status and condition of the missions in the Philippines, Japan, and China. Father Sola sends news of several Jesuit priests in the Philippines, including Fathers Onofre Esbri, Ignacio Sapata, Baptista Simon, Esteban Xayme, Francisco Martinez, and Ignacio Alcina. The Japanese have massacred as many Christians as they have been able to seize, and exiled to Macan all descendants of Japanese Christians, as well as Spanish and Portuguese. Although the Dutch have established factories in Camboja, which may jeopardize Spanish and Philippine ships that often anchor there, the Dutch have suffered setbacks as well. Sola cannot report on the missions in India, as no ships have arrived with any news, but there has been some progress in China, where some mandarins, noble, educated people, have been converted. Sola concludes by noting that last year's problems with the archbishop have been smoothed over, and that in general, the Christianization of the Philippines is going well, with some difficulties in Mindanao and Jolo, where the Muslims resist conversion.
