Summary
Collection of writing book fragments and other printed calligraphic materials, from Europe and the United States, dated between 1533 and 1943. The collection encompasses a wide range of calligraphic examples, whichi include not only sample books of alphabets, monograms, ornamental borders, and head- and tail-pieces, but also calligraphic drawings; broadsides; engraved frontispieces and title-pages; and textbooks illustrating how to sit properly while handwriting, how to grasp a pen, and how to cut a quill. There are some examples of English indenture forms, English bookplates, and a 19th-century Viennese merchant's certificate. Most of the examples are engraved plates or woodcuts, with some etchings by Daniel Hopfer from Opera Hopferiana, printed by Nuremburg print merchant David Funck during the 17th century, as well as several letterpress and lithography examples. Texts and alphabets represent many different writing styles, including black letter, roman capitals, and bâtarde cursive. Of special interest are the woodcut and letterpress leaves of Vicentino Ludovico degli Arrighi's Regola da imparare scrivere varii caratteri, printed in Venice in 1533, and the work of other European calligraphers Francesco Bessier, Adriaen de Clerck, Jr., J. Crawshaw, Lucas Fopsz, Daniel Hopfer, Lövényi Irta, Joseph Marianus, Georg Heinrich Paritius, Ambrosius Schevenhuijsen, Heinrich Ulrich, Nicolas Visscher, Heinrich Vogler, and Urban Wyss. American calligraphers are represented by a 1943 printed broadside containing a reproduction of a hand-lettered title for The Atlantic charter of Portland, Maine by W.A. Dwiggins, and two incomplete engraved copies of The American penman (1824, 1825, or 1830) by Eleazar Huntington of Hartford, Conn.
