Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

WrightMt. Washington July 6th 1849Mr. N. KendalDear Friend I have notrec'd a letter from you since you left hear and have not heard from you only by a letterwritten to Miss Weed by her sister stating that you andyour sister had arrived safe at home the day beforeshe wrote. I have nothing of importance to writeto you. I and my family are all well and thehealth of the village has been good since youleft, we have had no case of colery here andnone nearer to us than Louisville. and I thinkit likely that we will not have it here.The report of the board of health at Louisianalast week was from 15 to 20 deaths of Cholery per daysince that time it has been decreasingthis morning unclear it from 7 to 10 per day.at Cincinatti on yesterday 180 deaths 150 choleryat St Louis by telegraph on the 5th 187 deaths156 of cholery at New Orleans the health verrymuch improved. we are verry anxious to hear from you and to no whether or not youare coming back to take charge of thisaccademy. I would say to you don't be afraidto come here for I verily believe that it isas healthy here as it is any where in the UnStates
