Date 1863-1873

Subjects Lawyers, Legislators
Summary Mainly incoming correspondence of John V. LeMoyne, 1851-1875. The majority of the letters are addressed to LeMoyne in Chicago from family members and friends back home in Washington, Penn. Correspondents include Mary Anderson, Nettie Kennedy, Francis Julius LeMoyne, Frank LeMoyne, Jane LeMoyne, Julia LeMoyne, Madeline LeMoyne, Madeline Romaine Bureau LeMoyne, Nannie LeMoyne, Romaine LeMoyne, Thurston LeMoyne, Lizzie Shaler, Charlotte Wills, John Wills, and Wilma Wills. The letters focus on family affairs and show his mother's strong connections with her children and religious beliefs, and his father's opposition to his speculations in Chicago real estate. Letters from friends discuss opportunities in the West and Middle West, among other topics, and there are a few later letters (1888-1889) from London discussing a business matter. Also business and calling cards, a Gentian Club (Pittsburgh?) contract and members list, a letter from St. James Church in Chicago regarding LeMoyne's resignation as choir leader, and theatre tickets.
Biographical/Historical Note Chicago lawyer and congressman. John Valcoulon LeMoyne was born in 1828 in Washington, Penn., to Madeline Romaine Bureau LeMoyne and Francis Julius LeMoyne. His father, a well-known abolitionist, was a vice presidential candidate of the Liberty Party and later erected the first crematorium in the U.S. near Washington, Penn. John LeMoyne studied law in Pittsburgh and was admitted to the bar in 1852. Early that same year he toured the West, determining to settle in Chicago and practice law. Defeated in an 1872 run for Congress, LeMoyne ran again in 1876 and served for approximately one year. He continued to practice law in Chicago and retired to Baltimore, Md., in 1887.

User-Contributed Transcription Oct. 4thDear Johnny- I have always intended you should have a whole letter to yourself but somehow it seems as tho we have really been too much occupied to write. After so long an absence, it took me a little while to realize that I was back again and have something to do. We look back upon our visit with much pleasure and some satisfaction more if I could believe I had done any body any good. For it distresses me to think I do so little good in the world- for after all what is there worth living for- but doing good. I think of you all over & over again- of the merry, happy, good dear children and wish myself back again- but as Jane Potter always says "I have no reason to complean". every body seemed so glad to see us and welcomed us so heartily it would have been very ungracious in us, not to be glad too.
