Chicago Commons, Grand Ave. and Morgan Street
May 13/31
My dear Mr [Rosewald?],
[unclear] birthday greeting, red by Mr [Friedman?] to my comrades of the [M.V. L ?] and other civic groups at the Standard club on May [2nd?] went straight to my heart as it came from [unclear].
That you and other fellow citizens should feel indebted for anything I have [been?] or done surprises me, as my retrospect registers only such responses to obligation and opportunity as a citizen should make, for his city's sake not only, but for his own sake.  And am well aware how much I owe to Chicago for making me over and bring me hitherto.
What you have all along been to your city and done with and for your fellow citizens have exemplified a citizenship that inspires me and my fellow residents at Chicago Commons to live and work between all dividing lines for the common good.
Regretting so much your illness and hoping ardently for your speedy restoration to your great field of action,
Gratefully and cordially your friend
Grahan Taylor
