going but my expectations were more than realizedin a business point of view You ask me to tell you something about the Engineering DepartmentI think the profession of Civil Engineering holdsout the most reliable inducements, and willfor the next ten or twenty years, after an industriousenterprising and ambitious young manthan any to which he can devote his talents:I will give you my reasons. The Railroad spiritis vividly alive, engaging the the influenceof the talent and wealth of the country. This great and growing enterprise ks but barelyin motion. The principal trunk lints arenot yet competitive, and many more arebeing projected. There is continually ademand for railroad men -- men acquaintedwith science. There is no doubt in mymind but that the Pacific Road will beunder way erelong -- then only think ofthe demand for engineers! and even nowthe demand is great; many have charge oftwo Roads. A good scientific engineer hasno difficulty whatever in securing a situationat good pay.
