Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

User-Contributed Transcription Kendall to FrenchFrench La Porte Sept. 25th 1854Mr. FrenchDear Sir: In accordance with your request I have made out a condency statement of the Amount it will require in cash with the present contract prices to prepare for Iron that part of the C.P.& C.R.R. Extending from Plymouth to La Porte a distance of 30. miles, also the time which said way will be ready for the Iron.To finish the Clearing Grubbing Grading Bridging & C on the above mentioned 30 miles will require $30,000. Cash Ties 17,000. Incidentals 5,000 Total $52,000. cashThe road bed can be made ready for the Iron in three months time.I have also made an Estimate for the total cost of the whole road Extending from Marion to La Porte a distance of 97 1/2 Miles. which you will find below,Total cost Clearing, Grubbing, Grading, Bridging, & Co. 800,000Iron & Truck Laying 800,000Rolling Stock 175,000Contingencies 125,000 Total Cost of Roads & c. $1900,000The contract price for 100 mile of the road amounted to 3,200,000The present Contractors are to receive in Stock & Bonds at face value 19,00,000 300,000 1,600,000$3200,000 - $300,000 = 2,900,000 the Amt of R.R. Securities required? which to raise $16,00,000. 2,900,000. .75$2,175,000. Cash value of R.R. Securities & 2,175,000- $1,600,000. = $575,000 Nett profit at Cash value with our rise of Road at all
