Description Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

They seemed to acknowledge the superiority of the moon and appeared to retire from her too immediate presence in order that they might not shock her with their boldness in presuming to come out in all their dazzling brightness while she appeared so simple and unassuming in her bright though not dazzling splendor. They seem to know that they are not so much needed in her presence. Am important lesson may be learned from them it is to be modest, never to be guilty of acting rudely or in an ostentatious manner, to retire from the presence of the gifted and noble or at least not to crowd ourselves or rather our opinions which from our limited knowledge are not worthy of as much notice upon them, to always allow those most capable of judging to express themselves first. How much more graceful beautiful and with how much more admiration does that beholder witness an act however praiseworthy if performed in a simple manner than if paraded before the world; those who are cautious in this respect will meet with fewer sneers than those who take a different course. How much higher in the estimation of the refined and sensitive do those stand who appear modest on all occasions while the rude can continually shocking them with their rough manners.It is not necessary that anyone should sit as quiet as a lamb continually but they may with [unclear] let all their lively feelings play freely if they will but let them be well timed, and modesty may be considered as a predominant characteristic in them. If well timed laughter, joking, and merriment are not only allowable but are desirable employments, but to force it upon people when it is not called for is rude in the extreme.
