User-Contributed Transcription and the elder sister is left alone; she draws from her bosom a miniature, the miniature of her dead mother, imprints thereon a kiss, then gazes at it long and repeats her vows again and again to watch over and protect those left to her charge, instill into their minds those holy precepts which had been taught her from the bible. She gazes long - in the meantime contemplating the past history of her life and forming conjectures for the future. She is, thus seated in contemplation a fit subject for a painter or poet; none other couple delineate half the beauties of that being, engaged in such a delightful occupation, what serenity in those books! They speak volumes! They tell of the beauty of submission to the Divine will and say that the heart never wearies but still looks forward to a bright and glorious time even though the physical powers are the tasked with more than they can bear, that though storms may gather around, though sorrows and pains may bear upon the mind, yet that the bright rays of hope are still able to shine forth and prevent clouds from gathering on the brow, that sorrow teaches wisdom, renders the soul more pure and tells it to speed on in its endeavors to attain that degree of perfection which shall make it worthy of a position among the brightest and most glorious things of earth.
