User-Contributed Transcription
The morning --The morning of the 4th of July broke upon the inhabitants of a city situated on the shores of a clear and beautiful lake in great splendor. What more beautiful or sublime spectacle than a sunrise upon the water, it was more than usually grand and sublime at this time as a number of clouds were to be seen lying in the horizon, displaying all the varied colors of the rainbow. Flashes of light were seen streaming through the air, sent as warnings of the approach of the Wing of day and as they increased in number and brilliancy the sunbeams still more imposing. It is useless to attempt a description of what the soul can scarce comprehend. Let us turn from it but our eyes fall upon some objects at a distance which as they approach are discovered to be ships. As they glide along so smoothly and slowly a spectator cannot but be struck with their grace and simplicity, contrasting well with the grandeur and magnificence of the scene presented by nature, and is led to inquire "What is man that Thou art mindful of him?" But few there were to witness this sublime spectacle as most of the people were yet wrapt in the arms ofMorpheus unconscious of the magnificence with which they were surrounded. Among the chosen few who witnessed this scene was a maiden whose countenance I shall ever remember as it lighted up at each change in the scene revealing the feelings of the heart. N20
