Description
Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

little children played. One day a strong wind came up, and blew me off the tree, and I whirled round and round, till I fell to the ground. But a little stick held me down so that I did not blow away. When the wind was over, two little Children came to play, and one said, Oh! See this pretty leaf? I am going to carry it home, and put it into my book of dried leafes and flowers. Jennie LeeBirdsHow beautiful they are, in all their variety of form and plumage, from the little humming-bird, which hums about the flowers, to the great eagle, that flies far up in the air, towards the sun. All of them are pretty. They make the woods melodious their warblings, and show us their bright colors, as they fly from tree to tree. From early spring till late in the autumn, they cheer us with their songs. In autumn they migrate to the sunny climes at the south. We feel lonely after they are gone, as if some dear friend had bid us adieu. What if there were no birds! I love to look for their nests, and see their pretty eggs, and take their young in my hands. They are such innocent creatures, they should not be killed. I will mention these names, which inhabit the country, vis. The robin, whippoorwill, the cat-bird, chipping bird, unclear, wren, eagle, dove, swallow, lark, blue-jay, nightingale, quail, crane hawk, partridge, owl, crow, blue-bird, yellow-bird, oriole, and black-bird .ElsieThe black-berry partyIt was a fine afternoon in august that Jennie, and Martha, and Kay came to our house, to get me to go a black-berrying. It was about one o'clock when they came, and I was washing dishes, but they waited until I had finished them. Then I put on my bonnet, and soon was on the way.
