User-Contributed Transcription meant who said of me "that chair needs praising, its good qualities do not exhibit themselves upon trial and you (addressing the chairman) need to praise it if you wish to sell it." Finally a decrepit old woman who was very partial to easy chairs, after having heard me highly recommended was induced to purchase me. The day I entered her house my troubles began to accumulate. She required me to keep time with the simmering of the tea kettle, the ticks of the clock and the whiffs of her pipe;; This was entirely new business for me, I knew nothing of harmony and could learn nothing from her, though she talked of it continually, for she talked so loud and so strangely. I vainly attempted to please her but the more I tried to obey the more complaints I called forth for being so unmanageable. If her head ached she said that I had caused it, if the dinner was too late, whatever went wrong was caused by me. Oh, what life I have before me! thought I. Thus I lived one month, a long monthMay May
