AAmbition J. C. FledmanAmbition is the desire of power; and when possessed by an individual causes him to try to excel. It has truly been said that "knowledge is power" and governedby this hypothesis the ambitious person embraces every opportunitythat is presented, calculated to raise him to a higher station or to increase his power; with a view to becomegreat, to surpass others. He is very apt to attain the end forwhich he seeks in consequence of the untiring vigor with which he applies himself or if he do not attain it he willat least become a more intelligent and therefore useful memberof society. This desire seems to be implanted in our naturesby the Author of our being, but is increased or diminished according to the circumstances by which we are surrounded. If not only characterizes individuals but nations and as a general thing their prosperity is in proportion to the degree of ambition which they possess. The great menof all ages were distinguished by this characteristic; ifthey had not been they would never have reached the heighth of perfection which they did buy their namesand discoveries would have remained in oblivion. But ambition is not always a good thing for it is notalways rightly directed, as for instance when women talkof their public rights; as though they could not exert theirinfluence to as good an effect in some other way than speakingin public. A great majority of mankind are striving toobtain wealth, to fill their coffers with gold and neglectAge V A mas 47Oct
