Description
Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

Warwick.Warwick is the name of the town in which I live. Therefore, you must not expect me to say anything against it. The town is rather hilly: but it is inhabited by industrious farmers, with the usual number of Monsters, Doctors, Blacksmiths, Carpenters, Mechanics, etc. There are three meeting houses in town, one hotel, two stores, two blacksmith's shops. The names of the different societies are Unitarian, Orthodox, & Baptist. The respective pastors are Rev. Mr. Jackson, Rev. Mr. Bridge & Rev. Mr. Burnam. The Hotel is kept by Mr. Lemuel Scott & Mr.H.G. Mallard. One store is kept by the same persons, and the other by Mr. Forbes. The last named store is called a union store. There is one mountain in Town, called Mt. Grace. There is a little story, connected with the name of this mountain, which I will relate. At the early settlement of this town, A party of Indians passed through town on their way home. They had with the a family (which they had taken) consisting of a woman and two children. And when they were going over this mountain, the youngest child whose name was Grace, died, and was buried on the southern part of the mountain. This circumstance, is what gave Mt. Grace its name. From the summit of this mountain there is a beautiful prospect. And I think it would pay any one well to climb it on a clear pleasant day.
