Description Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

User-Contributed Transcription There is great danger of falling into the other extreme which is adhering to opinions which have once been formed after sufficient evidence has been produced to convince any rational being of his error. It is very unpleasant to converse with a person of this character, for having once formed his opinions in regard to any subject he will never yield them for fear that he will not appear dignified if he acknowledges himself mistaken. It ought to be the desire of every one to learn the truth and this is a great obstacle in arriving at it. Such persons will progress very slowly in whatever undertaking they engage and will gain the ill rather than the good will of the public and their associates will not respect them as they otherwise would. signature cut off?
