Description Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849. 
User-Contributed Transcription (For the casket) Though poverty may confine the physical comforts of man to quite a small number yet it can never effect the mind otherwise than by giving it greater energy. It is one of the surest means of calling out all the faculties of the mind. Among whom do we find the most brilliant imaginations? It is among those who are deprived of the means of obtaining luxuries for those who revel amid scenes where no energy is required, where nothing is to be done but to indulge in the gratification of all those desires which have a tendency to degenerate men are rendered stupid and unfit for the more refined employment of exercising the imagination. When seated as am I want to be under a thatched roof with no room made comfortable by a warm fire which I can call my own and with no furniture but such as is absolutely necessary and no wardrobe of silk and satin but one consisting only of such things as are most economical whether they exactly suit the fancy of their owner or not. It is then that the imagination takes its flights. Ah! It is people who are deprived of comforts and who have to exert themselves for all that they obtain that know how to appreciate the blessings which are bestowed on them. Labor sweetens everything, makes every faculty energic and renders the physical, mental and spiritual being of man more susceptible of impressions calculated to enhance his happiness. While our land is one of freedom we need not lament that wealth is not ours, but we ought to be thankful that happiness may be by employing
