Description Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

User-Contributed Transcription but partially explored a visit to them would be doubly interesting as it would not only afford gratification to the curiosity of the visitor but would enable him to contribute to the welfare of others to whom he might give an account. But the principal attraction and one which I think cannot fail to excite interest in everyone is the ruins of numerous cities, whose works of sculpture etc. indicate that they were built by a people far advanced in knowledge. The most interesting ruin in this country of which we have any account are those of Copan, Inis agua, Palinque and Axmal. These ruins which cover vast tracts of land consist of the remains of immense buildings and lofty temples, containing many sculptured ornaments, together with altars and monuments which are covered with hieroglyphics, enclosed within high walls and surrounded by terraces.
