Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

Dear Mr. Kendall, I was quite willing Mrs. H. should commence the letter, as you are our mutual friend I think she has hardly done her share of the writing heretofore, so far as my rights are concerned, it is not very hard for me to yield them when I see the greater good is accomplished thereby. I am never tenacious of rights when Mrs. H. will use her pen.It gave me much pleasure to hear from you, it seemed a long, long time since you wrote, no other that is not a brother or sister occupies the place in our affection that you do. We hope a happy life is just before you, I do rejoice that you are soon to fill the place you are so preeminently fitted to occupy. If you can have health you must be happy. We shall be glad to welcome you with your chosen one. to our own happy New England home, made every day dearer by the precious charge entrusted to our care. Life seldom wears a dreary prospect to me, hope is fully developed in my brain have now double cause to be cheerful still I know life will have its trials. I only ask that I may be forehand to meet them, there I shall not be harmed. Mrs. H. has spoken of her sickness - those were the most sorrowful days of my life, but a kind Father has dealt mercifully by us. I will tell you of the mismanagement when I see you, which was the cause of so much suffering. I try to forget the darkness of those few days. I am now alone in the house with one precious boy. Mrs. H. has gone to call upon Miss Marg. A. Howe who is at Mr. Hapgood's she has been sorely afflicted for the
