Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

[mary would object to this; but you will understand it]How sad is the thought that a child of God should enter upon an untried Eternity, having never heard of the goodness and love of God, or of His willingness to bestow, blessings on all those who come unto him for aid in the discharge of duty. In your letter you expressed a wish that I should give you my views of prayer. Would that I couldgive them in a manner perfectly satisfactoryto myself, for it is a subject on which I delightto dwell. as I cannot conceive how a person, whether in joy or in sorrow, in prosperity or adversity, can live the life of a christian without prayer. Although a man may, in the eyes of the world, have a character which is unimpeachable; he may be strenuous in his attendance upon public worship; and do much for the cause of religion, still if he does not make it his daily practice to seekthe mercy seal in prayer, I feel that he cannot have that fullness of joy which is felt by those who continue constant in prayer. Although it may not be all clear how a just God whose laws are immutible does answer prayer and bestow peculiar blessings, still I do feel that there is sufficient evidence to convince all that when a broken and contrite heartseeks in faith for [and - crossed out] strength in the hour of trialand affliction, he will be heard and answered. I do not deem it sufficient to consider that our prayers are answered merely in the pleasure we feel in contemplating the love of God. To me it does not seem possible that
