Thursday Sep 7th 1854, Mr. Kendall, This is the third time I havecommenced to write you in answer to your kindletter, but each time before have been called away eitherby callers, or some work that I had to attend to.I hope you will forgive my long silence, sinceyou [life - scratched out] were here. Kim has [?] her girl &consequently I have more to do. I often have a fewmoments [to - scratched out] of leisure time, but I generally feel so tired that I cannot write. Our family is well, Alice, whois still at home, is much better than she was in the Spring. Her cough does not trouble her any more. I hopewill not soon again if she is careful not to exposeherself. Frank grows finely & is getting quite saucy/savvy?
