Correspondence, writings, documents of Nathan Kendall and wife Abby J. Reed Kendall of Massachusetts, Indiana and Illinois, including many letters to each other before and after marriage in 1857, as well as numerous letters to and from members of their families, friends and former students. Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

Westminster July 2, 1851Much respected Friend,It is a sultry afternoon and as I look out into the dusty street, feel rings of satisfaction arise within my bosom, that I am so situated, that I can retire from the heat of the sun, to my cool and pleasant chamber, for the purpose of addressing one to whom I am much indebted for favors received in times past. You have spoken of my success in teaching. If it is true that I have succeeded in coming any where near the mark of duty in this calling. I cannot but feel that it is owing in no small degree, to the aid and encouragement, I received during the last three or four terms of my attending school in Ledgeville. When I recall scenes of those days my mind is filled with mingled emotions of pleasure and pain of pleasure as I reflect upon the many happy influences arising from the universal love and harmony which ever pervaded the minds and exhibited itself the conduct of both teacher and scholar;
