Your affectionate daughter  - Lucretia
Groveland Tazewell Co. Ill. Jan 29th 1849
Dear mother,
Would you not like to take a trip to Ill. this eve and just peep in and see how we look here. Yes, I know you would. If the telegraphic wires conveyed bodies as well as thoughts we would be a little more neighborly. Would'nt I see what you are about some evening? Imagine us seated around the table writing letters. I have now six in the family. Miss Hollister - the teacher - a man who is hopping for Mr. Gore, a boy who boards here and goes to school, who together with the parson, his spouse and baby complete the half dozen. The number will soon be diminished. We have become very attached to Miss H. She is very kind and amiable and seems almost like a sister to us. Mary runs to shake hands with her every time she comes from school - says "how do you do, is it cold"? We have had thus far a Yankee winter, and Mary has heard so much said about cold weather that when any one she knows comes in, she asks "is it cold, is it cold"?  We have had steady cold weather since winter commenced and about 5 weeks as good sleighing as was ever known any where. It is warmer now and is raining. Mary is learning to talk very fast. She tries to say almost every thing and can speak a great many words quite plain. She can make all her wants known. When thirsty she says "oter" and when tired and sleepy "ock-o-by-lo." A short time since I was away from home with her
