Description Correspondence between Christopher Gardner Pearce, who was a Mississippi steamboat captain, and his wife Jane Ann (Sackett), beginning during their courtship in 1839 and continuing until 1851, the year in which Jane Ann died. The letters discuss a variety of subjects, including Pearce's life on the river, Jane Ann’s domestic life in Cincinnati, business, religion, politics, and family news and gossip. Also included is Pearce’s obituary from 1882, and a 1943 newspaper clipping that reprints a large check that Pearce wrote to a grocer in 1865. 
User-Contributed Transcription Cairo Oct. 4th 1846My Dear Wife,The "Cincinnati" arrived here yesterday morning after considerable detention by being aground between this place and Paducah, We are making up a trip for New Orleans and expect to leave here to day, or tomorrow morning should the boats looked for from above not arrive sooner. We also have competition in abundance, which causes what is done to be performed for almost nothing, --I will write you again from Memphis and give more particulars relative to our trip. -- We are all well on board, and fondly hope this may find you all participating the same, -- I have felt quite lonely since I parted with you, + often think of the Society of yourself and our little daughters. -- Charley was well when I parted with him at Paducah, I have to inform you that Egbert was in one of his drinking spells whilst at Paducah, but finally tapered off. I hope for his, and your sake's he will remain as he should do. -- I send you pr Capt. Whittin one small Phial Head Ache remedy which is to be applied externally on the
